He was predeceased by: his father Charles Bates; and his brother William L. Bates, Sr.. He is survived by: his mother Erma Pierce-Bates of Chicago, Illinois.; his spouse Narda Ellis; his daughters, LaToya Runnels of Chicago, Chadie Johnson of Chicago and LaNetha Ellis of Charleston; his sisters, Dorothy Space of Chicago, Yolanda Branch of Chicago, Dianna Bates of Chicago and Raquel Bates of Chicago; his grandsons, Jaylan Anderson of Chicago, Aaden Scott of Chicago and Caleb Johnson of Chicago; his uncles, Raymond Pierce of Chicago and Greg Pierce of Chicago; and his close friends, Olivia Larry of St. Peters and Greg Frazier, Sr. of Charleston. He is also survived by nephews, nieces, cousins, and many friends.
