He was predeceased by: his parents, William L. Stanton and Roberta M. Craycraft Stanton; and his siblings, Judy K. Richardson and Gerald D. Stanton. He is survived by: his wife Anna Riley; his children, James Stanton Jr., Brian Stanton, Brad Stanton, Lori DeFries, Jennifer Stanton, Doug Garcia, Tonya King (Josh), Robert Riley (Andrea) and Harold DeFrieze; and his pets, Baxter and Frankie. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 15th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Schroder Mortuary- Colona (213 1st St, Colona, IL 61241). A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 16th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Friday, October 16th 2026 at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
