He was predeceased by: his parents, Roscoe Nelson and Helen Nelson (Downing); his wife Teri Fitzgerald; his siblings, Sue Witsman, Bill Nelson and Pam Steinwand; and his stepsisters, Debbie Hughes and Robin Keele.
He is survived by: his children, Jason Nelson of Danville and Samantha Gumble (Drew) of Springfield; his grandchildren, Sawyer and Sadie Gumble; his stepbrother Keith Downing (Toni) of Rossville; Renee Mroz and Tyke Askins.
Memorial donations may be made in Michael's name to the American Heart Association.
