He was predeceased by: his parents, William Vincent Johnston, Jr. and Jeanne Suzanne Johnston (Shaw); his wife Sharon Lee Stewart; and his brother William Vincent Johnston III. He is survived by: his son William Vincent Johnston IV; his siblings, Mark E. Johnston of Decatur, Leslie S. Norman (Jeff) and Ann E. McCauley (Vincent); and his granddaughter Aurora Ann Johnston.
