With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Walter Tyus of Decatur, Illinois, born in Brownsville, Tennessee, who passed away on May 13, 2024 at the age of 78. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his siblings, Oscar L, Lonnie D., Alfred, Minnie F. Reed, Virgie Rae Tyus, Felicia Bullock, Lottie Webster (Kate), Pauline C. Bond and Lillie Ora Anderson.
He is survived by: his wife Lydell Fry; his children, Thurman (Danisha), Patricia and Andre (Dawn); his grandchildren, Chassity, Keenan (Rika), Aubrianna, Michael, Diarus, Thurman Jr., Braelyn, Akeemah, Akeelah and Camden; and his sisters, Irma Gene Bennett, Mamie D. Bolds, Marion B. Powell and Mildred Halliburton (Evon). He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
He achieved many awards and ribbons for the fruit and vegetables that he bore, never keeping much for himself, but firmly believing in freely donating the crops to others, especially senior citizens throughout the city.
