He was predeceased by: his parents, Reinhold Gommel and Hedwig Gommel (Honeck); his wife Donna; and his sister Dorothy Latimer (Bruce). He is survived by: his children, Dave Gommel (Jeanette) of Malta, Sharon Popp (Jon) of Gilbert and Mark Gommel (Laurie) of Malta; his grandchildren, Julie Bailey (Andy), Christy Popenhagen (Dan), Katie Popp, Kaleb Popp, Maria Taylor (Bryan) and Erik Gommel (Lori); and his great grandchildren, Jason Popenhagen, Leland Gommel, Elijah Gommel and Eldon Gommel.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites memorial gifts to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Malta Fire Department.
