He was predeceased by : his parents, Troy Lance and Renee Lance (Jeaganot); his brothers, Richard Lance and Brian Lance; and his brother-in-law Mick Royster.

He is survived by : his wife Jane Lance of Dixon; his sons, Jimmy Lance (Athena) of Solon, IA and Matt Lance (Melissa) of Dixon; and his siblings, Michael Lance, John Lance, Chris Lance and Nena Royster of Dixon. He is also survived by five grandchildren; one great-grandson.

A memorial has been established.

Patrick E. White wrote a sympathy message

“I attended St. Mary's Grade School and Dixon High with Jim, and I remember him as a very good guy. We played on the same summer baseball team and did school sports too; his dad was one of our coaches, if memory serves. Jim was a steady friend, with a quick smile and an easy manner. I never knew him to do a mean thing. I will remember Jim and his brother Dick fondly. I was lucky to know them both. My condolences to Jim's family, and may his memory be a blessing.
