He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles D. Schaefer and Mildred Schaefer (Lutz); and his siblings, Barbara Moon, Eileen Verner and Richard Schaefer.

He is survived by: his sons, Jason Schaefer (Chris) of Du Quoin and William Schaefer (Anne) of Bardstown, KY; his grandchildren, Ashlee Hester (Blake) of Du Quoin, Seth Barnes of Marion, IL, Elizabeth Schaefer of Bardstown, KY, Patty Schaefer of Bardstown, KY, Niki Clark (Briar) of Du Quoin, Noah Barnes (Amberley) of Du Quoin and William Schaefer, Jr. of Bardstown, KY; and his siblings, Charles Schaefer, Jr., Daniel Schaefer, Stephen Schaefer (Cheryl), Carol Burghardt and Nancy Forsee. He is also survived by six great grandchildren.
