He is survived by: his daughter Avea Thompson; his father Pete Castle (Fonda); and his sisters, Kimberly Thompson, Crystal Castle (Emanuel Adames), Brittany Rudolph (Colt Mayer), Morgan Castle (Nick Dahle), Jenna Castle and Chelsea Castle. He is also survived by the mother of his daughter and his longtime friend, as well as her family.

Derek's final gift of organ donation was a reflection of who he was—a person who cared deeply for others and wanted to make a difference.
