He was predeceased by: his wife Margaret "Peggy" Winkler; and his parents, Russell Winkler and Muriel Winkler. He is survived by: his children, Chuck Winkler (Shelly) and Cheri Spies; his grandchildren, Dylan, Taylor, Maverick and Bennett; his great grandchildren, Ellie Rose and Oliver; his siblings, Joani Libby, Michael Fisher (Sonya) and Linda Dobson Appenzeller; his siblings-in-law, Michael Buenrostro (Theresa), Jo Anne Meade (Jim "Hoch" Hochhauser), Jim Buenrostro (Robin), Joe Buenrostro (Julie) and Al Buenrostro; his nieces and nephews, Jodi Ritter (Brandon), Michael Buenrostro (Jamie), Elizabeth Ramnytz (Ben), Jeremy Buenrostro (Abby), Jimmy Buenrostro, Josh Buenrostro (Rita) and Jennifer Chevalier; and his grandchildren, Devida, Mia, Tosha, Taiya, Kahlua, Mesa Marie, Sierra Ann, Zoie Rhae and Sasha Rose.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the West Chicago Professional Firefighters Association Local 3970. Donations will go towards safety equipment and materials for local schools.
