He was predeceased by: his parents, George W. Leighty and Esther Steede Leighty; his former wife Mary Lou Kaiser; and his brother Leighton L. Leighty. He is survived by: his wife Thelma Ragnes Leighty; his son Howie Leighty (Caristan); his sister Gwen Leighty Moeller; his aunt Aggie Steede; and his sister-in-law Marilyn Leighty. He is also survived by 8 nieces and nephews.
