She was predeceased by: her parents, Harlan Opell and Lois Opell (Cochran); her brother Brent Opell; and her granddaughter Hailey Dawn Waldrop. She is survived by: her husband Vernon Cates; her children, Rennie Cates (Amanda) of Fairfield and Crystal Richardson (Tommy) of Mt. Vernon, IL; her grandchildren, Jasmine Waldrop, Bryce Waldrop and Aiden Cates; her great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Grayson and Jaxon; and her siblings, Brenda King (Eddie) of Fairfield, Rick Opell and Denny Opell (Georgia) of Fairfield. She is also survived by several cousins and nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 2nd 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Cumberland Chapel Cemetery (2096 County Rd 1320, Fairfield, IL 62837).
Memorials in her honor can be made to help with funeral expenses and will be accepted at the service or the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home.
