He was predeceased by: his parents, Friedrich Schaefer and Agnes Schaefer (Lux); his in-laws, Clifford, Loretta Hagen and Benjamin Knutti; and his siblings-in-law, Michael Bannes and Levina Meyers.

He is survived by: his daughter Elisabeth Agnes; his wife Brenda Schaefer (Knutti); his siblings, Rudi Schaefer (Diana), Elfie Bannes and Hiltrud Hansen (Theo); and his siblings-in-law, Doug Knutti, David Hagen (Wendy), Diana Schaefer (Rudi) and Karen Davenport (Tim). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established for Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
