He was predeceased by: his son Mark. He is survived by: his wife Susan Shelby; his daughter Janet Avila (Ramiro); his grandsons, Eric, Adam Avila and Mason Schurmeier; and his brother Jon.

Jerry and his brother Jon contributed 55 acres of woodland which was the first property owned by the Foundation and is now known as The Schurmeier Teaching Forest, Susan and he traveled extensively.
