He was predeceased by : his parents, James Walter Mathis Jr. and Cynthia Ray Mathis (Taylor); his wife Betty Jean Hendricks; and his siblings, Annie Yarbrough, J. W. Mathis and Luther Mathis.

He is survived by : his children, Debra Shrum (Gary) of Granite City, IL, David Mathis of Granite City, IL and Richard Mathis of Granite City, IL; his siblings, Ollie Bryant of Dover, TN, Larry Mathis (Marie) of Dover, TN and Roland Mathis (Sandy) of Dover, TN; and his sister-in-law Jean Mathis of Dover, TN. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Nameoki United Methodist Church. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
