He was predeceased by: his parents, Fern Birkey and Jesse Birkey; and his sister Verla Birkey Martin (Donald). He is survived by: his wife Catherine Birkey (Barding); his children, Phil Birkey (Rachel), Frannie Farney and John Crutcher; his grandchildren, Faith DeLay (Dawson), Mariah Farney, Benjamin Farney, Jayden Crutcher, Illyianna Crutcher, Susie Birkey, Grant Birkey and Winston Birkey; his great grandchildren, Myles, Isaiah and Coralee; and his brothers, Ken Birkey (Bonnie), Norman Birkey, Mel Birkey (Nancy) and Arlan Birkey (Sally). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Christian Life Academy in Hopedale would be appreciated.
