He was predeceased by : his parents, Walter Bates and Martha Bates (Watson); his wife Frances Wolfe; and his sisters, Eileen Anderson and Bola Pauley.

He is survived by : his children, Dana Lindley (Jerry) of Saginaw, TX, Vickie Kindred (Bob) of Jacksonville, Donna Watkins (Steve) of Jacksonville and Donald Bates of Jacksonville; his grandchildren, Carson Lindley (Lindsey) of Fort Worth, TX, Dalton Kindred of Springfield, Dylan Watkins of Jacksonville, Sam Watkins (Kayla) of Jacksonville, Jessica Watkins of Jacksonville, Lindsay Lancaster (Jeff) of Jacksonville and Jenna Chumbley (Kevin) of Coal Valley, IL; his niece Linda Griffin; and his nephews, Larry Anderson (Sharon), Dennis Pauley (Lois) and John Pauley (Diane). He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren.

Marsha Meskan wrote a sympathy message

“I am so sorry to hear that Don passed. I grew up playing with the Bates family on Hardin and often considered their home my second home. Frances was like a second mom and continued to be a rock for me through high school. I remember Don was always working on a project. I think he was a really great woodworker. I even remember his mom, "Granny." I also recall spending the night there several times and sneaking off to Nichols Park. The "twins " were friends with my sister. Love to you all!”
