He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Elmer A. Nelson and Mabel Mae Nelson (Jones); his brothers, Rev. David Nelson (Patricia) and Rev. Duane Nelson (Marlys); and his brother-in-law Rev. Jan Horne.

He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth; his children, Christopher Nelson (Jennifer) of Monticello, Illinois, Noelle Meyer of Mahomet, Illinois and Megan Traeger (Aaron) of Normal; his sisters, Linda Horne (Jan) and Leah Haussmann (Walt); and his grandchildren, Jack, Lilly Meyer, Avery, Amelia, Abby Traeger, Andrew and Margaret Nelson. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 7th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church (501 W State St, Mahomet, IL 61853).
