James William left this world on May 28, 2025 at the age of 96, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. He was predeceased by: his parents, Homer M. Butler and Eva Butler (Clarida); his wife Dorothy Jane Barth; his son Jeffrey Butler; his brother Robert "Bob"; his siblings-in-law, Louetta Butler, Wayne Barth, Lawrence Barth (Virginia "Ginny"), Delores Fairbanks and Erlena Dwyer (Edward); and his niece Pat Clobridge (Allen).

He is survived by: his children, Cathy Carruthers (Gary) of Godfrey and Richard "Dick" Butler (Jill) of Marion, Illinois; his grandchildren, Andrew Carruthers (Heidy), Caitlin Reyes (Michael), Alyse Aquino (Patrick), Caleb Butler and Connor Butler; his great grandchildren, Sophia Carruthers, Camila Carruthers, Gabriela "Gaby" Carruthers, Ila Reyes, Ivy Reyes and Max Reyes; his nieces and nephews, Beth Butler, Joan Sanders (Terry), Tim Barth (Roberta), Leann Wise (Roy), Dennis Fairbanks and Beth Fairbanks; and his friends, Mitch McGee and Gail West. He is also survived by three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd 2025 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home (900 N Court St, Marion, IL 62959). A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 3rd 2025 at 2:00 PM at the same location. At the time the church closed during the Covid pandemic, he was the oldest and longest-serving member of the church.
