He was predeceased by: his parents, John Anderson and Opal Mae Barnwell (Graves); his wife Sylvia "Carlene" Sprague; his son John David Barnwell; and his brothers, James "Barney" Barnwell and Paul Barnwell (Mamie).
He is survived by: his daughters, Carla Susanne Barnwell (Eileen Gebbie) of Martinsville and Maria L. Barnwell Hafford (John) of Marion; his grandson John Barnwell Glenn "Jack" Hafford; and his sibling's children, Samuel Barnwell and Laura Barnwell Sims of Marion.
