He was predeceased by : his parents, Albert Jefferson and Ruby James (Rushing); his brother Albert Lee Drummonds James; and his half-siblings, Alberta Brandon, Genevieve Manning and Lester James.

He is survived by : his wife Jane James; his daughter Lisa James (Diane Skwirz); his stepson Tyler Riley (Zoe Zettle); his grandsons, Levi Stevenson Riley, Mason Gage Riley and Sebastian Riley; and his brothers, John James and Ernest James (Mary). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
