He was predeceased by: his parents, Glennie Cates and Alice Cates; and his siblings, Louise Parnell (Dee), Francis Hotchkiss (Jim) and James Cates (Cathy).
He is survived by: his wife Barb Cates; his children, Ken Cates (Julie) of Estero, FL, Dan Cates (Lori Morgan) of Ballwin, MO and Susan Frechman (Jim) of Collinsville, IL; his grandchildren, Joshua Cates, Erich Frechman, Daniel Cates, Joe Cates and Breanna Frechman; and his brothers, George "Max" Cates (Mary) and Dennis "Russell" Cates (Brenda). He is also survived by brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
