He was predeceased by : his parents, John D. Abernathy and Joyce A. Abernathy; and his sister Betty J. Hawkins. He is survived by : his son Jason Abernathy (Ashley) of East Alton; his grandchildren, Bailey, Little Jason "Bub", Connor, Skyler, Ian, Dominick, Hannah, Jacob, Piper and Loretta; and his siblings, Phillip Hodges and Paula Hodges.

Memorials may be given to his grandchildren, in care of Jason Abernathy.
