He was predeceased by: his parents, Nolan Buchanan and Hazel Buchanan (Trotter); his former wife Doris Buchanan (Henry); his son Michael Wayne Buchanan; his siblings, Bernard, Owen Buchanan, Lorene Garrison and Eva Pickett; and his grandsons, Jonnie Beppler and Joe David Buchanan, Jr..

He is survived by: his children, Joe Buchanan of Nason, Illinois, Janet Beppler (Jack) of Mount Vernon, Peggy Graham of Mount Vernon, Tammy Coffman (Tony) of Mount Vernon and Angela Buttrum of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and his sister Neva June Buttrum of Mount Vernon, Illinois. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
