He was predeceased by : his parents, Bishop Herschel and Bertha Gilbert (Cox); his son James "Jamie" Gilbert; and his siblings, Lester Gilbert, Dick, Bob, Jake, Tom Gilbert, Nelma Tatum, Anna Robinson, Emily Boughton and Aline Shotts.

He is survived by : his wife Sharon Hunt; his daughter Pam Fisher (Mark); his daughter-in-law Dara Gilbert; his grandchildren, Joy Wilbur (Don), Misty Duncan (Trevor), Jenny Vyas (Bimal), Kristy Wilson (Gerald), Daniel Gilbert, Gina Foster (Drew), Robin Grohmann (Dan) and Curtis Fisher (Laura); and his great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Sydney, Macie, Akhil, Raina, Charlotte, Enzi, Hollis, Scott, Ian, Sela, Flint, Ezekial, Willow and Zurianna.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
