He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Zanger, Sr. and Elizabeth Venvertloh; his son David "Stomp" Zanger; his brother Donald "Donnie" Zanger; his son-in-law Brad Wargo; his parents-in-law, John and Mavis Plummer; and his great-nephew Easton Zanger.

He is survived by: his wife Mary; his children, Linda M. Sperry (Doug) of Mendon, IL, James G. Zanger (Tina) of Quincy, Barbara A. Wargo (Brad) of West Branch, IA and Marcia L. East (Joshua) of Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren, Jared Sperry (Erica), Jordan Zanger, Tanner Zanger (Amanda Pennock), Madison Sperry, Hunter Wargo, McKenna East, Jenna Zanger (Ryan Dietrich), Jonathan Wargo and Hunter East; and his siblings, Robert W. Zanger, Jr. (Nancy), Lawrence H. Zanger (Donna), Ed Zanger, Mary Courty (Clive), Rose Cherry (Andy) and Mike Zanger (Janice). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
