He was predeceased by: his parents, Melvin Mims and Velma Mims Sr. (Gipson); his children, John E. (Mimmie) and Helene Mims-Adams; his son-in-law Errol Simpson; Jeff Mims.

He is survived by: his daughters, Inde'a Shepherd and Sherlene Simpson; his daughter-in-law Pamela J. Mims; his sisters, Dorothy Wilson and Gloria Williams; and his grandchildren, Ariel Simpson and Amber Simpson-Lizarraga (Aldo). He is also survived by Several great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.
