He was predeceased by: his parents, James F. Hess and Ethel Rose Griffin (Hess); his wife Virginia Lee Douglas (Ginny); and his siblings, Richard Tukesbrey, Barbara Dyer, James Hess, Earl "Loyd" Hess, Alan Hess and Gerald Hess.

He is survived by: his children, Brenda Hess of Quincy, Tammie Todd (Edward) of Ursa and Russell Hess Jr. (Rusty) of Quincy; his grandchildren, Tasha Farris (Jimmy) of Quincy, Tisha Thomas (Joe) of Quincy, James Hedberg (Barbie) of Plainville, Justin Todd of Ursa, Nathan Todd (Jessica) of Quincy, Russell Hess III (Allyson) of Quincy, Jamie Hess (Pam Volz) of Council Bluffs, IA and Mariah Hess (Angelo Morgan) of Quincy; and his brother Gene Hess (Desiree) of Boise, ID.. He is also survived by 19 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
