“I met Sam in Dallas in 2008 at a 489th Bomb Group reunion while researching for a novel (I am now in the finishing stages) about my great-uncle, who perished in the European Theater of Operations. Sam, the bombardier on the B-24 "Impassionada," knew my uncle. While I only spoke with him for mere minutes of a busy day speaking with other members of the 489th, I was impressed with his humility. The only heroes, in his mind, were the men who did not come home. To the contrary, he was a hero!”
