He was predeceased by: his parents, David Paul and Virginia Backmeyer (Youngflesh); his wife LaDonna Backmeyer (Breidfjord); his stepgrandson Chad Ryder; and his stepgreat-granddaughter Maggie Lowe.
He is survived by: his son Kristjan Backmeyer (Susan) of Moline; his stepchildren, Michelle Ryder (Charlie) of Burlington and Michael Botta (Dawn) of Narrows, Virginia; his stepgrandchildren, Emily Rose Geiger (Ben) of Verona, Kyle Ryder of Burlington and Charles Hendricks of Mount Pleasant; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Raven Hendricks, Wyatt Lowe and Willow Geiger; his brother Thomas Backmeyer (Maggie) of Fort Mill; and his sister-in-law Julie Peurasaari of Alanson, Michigan. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 13th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home (3030 7th Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any donations be made to the Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation or The Augustana Fund for Financial Aid.
