He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Gabel and Irene Gabel (Ganther); his wife Betty (Cropp); his children, Jack, Tom, Mark and Barbara Ann Horsfall; his children-in-law, Kirk Mengelt and Linda Gabel; his grandson Daniel DeGroat; his sister Donna Taylor; and his siblings-in-law, Vince Cropp, Milton Cropp, Burton Alms, Alvin Alms, Robert Metters, Lois Alms, Evelyn Alms, Juanita Metters, Cathy Johnson, Frannie Cropp and Ann Cropp.
He is survived by: his children, Gail Hutchins (Dennis), Loretta DeGroat, Mary Beth Mengelt, Julia Cuccinelli (Michael) and Bruce Gabel (Brenda); his daughter-in-law June Gabel; and his brothers-in-law, Ron Cropp (Barbara) and Charles Johnson. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 23rd 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory - Riverside (3910 N Rockton Ave, Rockford, IL 61103). A funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 23rd 2025 from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at the same location.
