He was predeceased by : his parents, Demissie Asfaw and Taytu Nadew; and his brothers, Habte Selassie and Yenesaw Demissie. He is survived by : his wife Gloria J. Demissie; his children, Zewditu of Georgia and Melaku (Brittney) of Illinois; his grandchildren, Ethan and Zenaye; his siblings, Yaynalem of Georgia, Yohannes (Sarah) of Washington, DC, Ephrim (Hilina) of California, Yimegnushal (Theodros) of California, Tigist (Maru) of California, Assefa "Beze" (Hanna) of Ethiopia and Fasika of California; and his siblings-in-law, Thelma Young, Clementine Eiland (Levander), Dorothy Yarborough, Janis Magee and Emmitt Louie (Gwen). He is also survived by one aunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

“I remember Mike as a friend, inspiring colleague, and a trusting supervisor. Mike was thorough, patient, and enthusiastic when discussing results with us. Oftentimes his suggestions made us felt encouraged to challenge the work further. The picture was taken at HuKou Waterfalls in China, after the 1st Sino-US Workshop on Sediment Transport and Disaster in Beijing, 1999.”
