He was predeceased by: his mother Mildred Smith; his wife Judith "Judy" Anne Kelly; and his sister Judy Sodaro. He is survived by: his children, Jeff Smith (Kelly) of West Chicago, Jason Smith (Val) of Champaign and Jennifer Moore of Knoxville, TN; his grandchildren, Jessica, Nicki, Keely, Kamryn and Maddie; and his siblings, Shirley Jones (Earnie), Mary Navkal and Rudy Lederer (Jane).

Silas Glisson wrote a sympathy message

“Charles and I grew up together as we were cousins. His mother, Mildred Smith and my mother, Dorothy Glisson were sisters. He was called "Smitty": by me and I was called "Tuffy". In our teens we went to the movies every Sunday at the Esquire theater on south MacArthur Blvd. Smitty was a great friend and we enjoyed being together. It is sad that he died, but now he is with the Lord. He and his wife Judy will always be remembered by my wife Mary and me. Silas Glisson (Tuffy)”
