He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Dale and Colette Marie Swyndro Smeltzer. He is survived by: his children, Christine Hansen (Tim Schachtschneider) of Bloomington, IL and Michael Smeltzer (Lauren Hughes) of Lovettsville, VA; his brother Richard Smeltzer (Roxanne) of Cedar Rapids, MI; his nephew Nolan; and his niece Mara Hansen.
To honor Dennis's memory, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, Southern Poverty Law Center, Eastern Illinois University's Biological Sciences department, and the Guardian Angel Basset Rescue.
