He is survived by: his children, Brad (Stacey) and Elizabeth; his grandchildren, James "Dakota" Edgar (Shannon), Cali Ward (Mark), Ellie Gregory (Cole), Jake Edgar Lowe and Cecilia Edgar Lowe; and his wife Brenda Edgar. He is also survived by children and grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and friends.

“My condolences to the family of Jim Edgar. I attended Eastern Illinois University at the same time as Jim and got to know him well while working in the Student Senate at the same time he was there. He demonstrated a good sense of right and wrong at that time through his tenure as Student Body President. Students were concerned about many more issues than student government, but part of those concerns was democracy in student government and Jim always seemed ready to lead the way in those matters”
