He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond McHatton and Meryle Daniels McHatton; his wife Roselyn M. Nichols; and his siblings, Dean and Imogene.
He is survived by: his sons, Dan S. Shields (Karen) of Springfield, Bill R. Shields (Sandy) of Phoenix, Kevin R. McHatton of Waverly and Keith R. McHatton (Bridget) of Springfield; his brother-in-law Duane Nichols of Evansville, Indiana; his niece Janine Goodin; and his nephew Steve McHatton. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
