He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil Mattox and Lucille Mattox (Musgrave); and his brothers, Virgil Jr., Melvin and William "Bill" Mattox.
He is survived by: his wife Ellen Bergschneider; his children, Kristy Chenoweth (Gary) of Rock Island, Terra Roemerman (Jeff) of Bettendorf, IA, Shana Gray of Springfield, Sam Mattox of Mechanicsburg, IL and Mike Mattox (Kasey) of Sherman, IL.; and his sister Sharon Ziegler of Pontiac, IL. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren: two great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 16th 2026 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Staab Funeral Home - Springfield (1109 S 5th St, Springfield, IL 62703). A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 16th 2026 at 11:30 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church (722 S 12th St, Springfield, IL 62703).
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic War Veterans Bishop McNicholas Post 1916 or to the Disabled American Veterans.
