He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hirkala and Suzanna Hirkala (Yuskov); his wife Dorothy Salz; and his siblings, Ann Reed, John and Joseph Hirkala.

He is survived by: his children, Diana Hirkala of Streator, David Hirkala (Jeanne) of Streator and Daniel Hirkala of Streator; and his grandchildren, Thomas Hirkala of Ladd, Marcus Hirkala (Meaghan) of Ladd and Ann Meyers (Cam) of Streator.

Memorials may be directed to St. Michael the Archangel Church.
