He was predeceased by: his parents, Glenn Rudolph "Pat" McDowell and Julia Francis McDowell (Bennett); his wife Janet Kay Cooper; and his daughter Jana Shafer. He is survived by: his children, Todd McDowell (Christi) of Vandalia and Kimberly Frederick (Bill) of Washington, MO; his grandchildren, Lyndsay Doehring (Billy), Adam Shafer, Tessa Gaffner (Nathan), Gage McDowell and Jake McDowell; his great grandchildren, Macy, Jaida, Aleigh, Zayden, Kynlea, Kaiden, Landen, Dawsyn, Lucas, Amelia, Liam and Waylen; and his great great grandchildren, Dominic and Roamy.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to the family.
