He was predeceased by: his parents, Keith W. Hess and Ruby A. Hess (Osborne); his former wife Joyce A. Hess (Speidel); his sister Dawn D. Hess; his stepdaughter Sherri L. Everitt; and his son-in-law Brian E. Schmidt.

He is survived by: his wife Saundra; his daughters, Tonia Deane (Tim), Lenora Steele (Robert) and Angela R. Schmidt; his stepchildren, Jim Everitt (Lisa), Brad Everitt and Lisa Woodruff (Chuck); his grandchildren, Chris Deane, Jessica Davis, April Jones, Nicole Green, Nathan Everitt, Jennifer Everitt, Eric Everitt, Lexy Myers and Megan Newton; and his siblings, Ronald K. Hess, Anson K. Hess, Cheryl C. Perry and Bruce A. Hess. He is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to Alzheimer's Association.

“I am very sorry to hear of Dwight's passing and it upsets me that Dwight and I didn't keep in touch over the years. Dwight and I lived just across the street from each other many years ago in Dunkirk. Dwight was a very good friend, fishing buddy, mushroom hunting partner, and knowledgeable mechanic. Dwight was a very good man and friend, as was Anson, Dawn, and others of the Hess family. My sincerest condolences to the family. In the Love of Jesus, Art Jester”
