He was predeceased by: his parents, Stanley Smith and Martha Smith (Powell); his wife Shirley Smith (Bauer); his sons, Michael, Rusty and Dan Smith; his granddaughter Alyssa Atkinson; his sister Ruth Nelson; and his son-in-law Allen Atkinson.
He is survived by: his children, Thomas "Tom" Smith (Diane) of Osgood and Jenna "Janie" Atkinson of South Carolina; his sister Penny Richason (Tom); his niece Shelley Johnson; his grandchildren, Jillian Theuerling (Jack) and Dylan Werner (Liz); and his great grandchild Lark Michael.
Memorials may be given in honor of Joe to St. John Lutheran Church.
