He was predeceased by: his parents, James Edward Smith and Ola Mae Wood; his wife Ann; and his sister Karen Lovell. He is survived by: his children, Amy Toole (Lee) of Tupelo and Christopher Smith (Angie) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Madeleine Toole, Robert "Trip" Toole, MaryGrace Toole, Erika Green (Doug), Megan Smith and Samuel Smith; and his sisters, Peggy Weishaar, Linda Graham (Charles), Jacqueline Ward and Kathleen Cowan. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
