He was predeceased by : his parents, Clifton Tarter and Lola Tarter (Webb); his sister Kay; and his niece Carla. He is survived by : his wife Nancy Tarter (Smith); his children, Christine Wade (Jason) and Gary Tarter (Jennifer); his stepchildren, Melanie Mitchell and Mike Mitchell; his grandchildren, Marisa Fidler (Tilden), Connor Felton and McKenna Raventos (Braxton); and his great grandchildren, Camden, Ellie Fidler, Axel and Isla Raventos.

Visitation was held on Sunday, April 21st 2024 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard (3000 E 3rd St, Bloomington, IN 47401). A funeral service was held on Sunday, April 21st 2024 at 5:00 PM at the same location.

Gary would have liked for donations to be made to the Monroe County Animal Shelter, or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
