G Dale Greenawald wrote a sympathy message

“I am deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. He was a remarkable scholar, teacher and proponent for civic education. But in addition, to me he was a treasured friend and mentor always encouraging me and ever so humble despite his international acclaim. John was always a gentleman with a kind heart and encouraging word bringing out the best in those around him. I treasure my time with him! He will be sorely missed by all who knew him and his passing leaves a deficit in my world”

John Hale wrote a sympathy message

“John was a legendary scholar and leader in the field of civic education for democracy and in social studies overall, and it was an honor to get to know him and become friends with him over the course of 35 years. He shared his learning and his wisdom freely and was loved by people not only in the US but around the world. His passing is a great loss and I hope his family’s grief is tempered by the love that I and multitudes of others are sending their way. He will always be in my heart. John Hale”
