He was predeceased by: his parents, Perry Smith and Dorothy Smith (Baker); and his sister Judy Deganutti. He is survived by: his grandchildren, Jayden, Kaleb, Logan, Ethan, Emerson and Carolina; his children, Jeff Smith of Brownsburg, Indiana and Jamie Graebe of Bloomington; his extended family, Don Deganutti, Dan Deganutti (Julie), Debbie Deganutti, Michael Deganutti (Shannon) and Krista Powell Sparrow (Kent); and his pet Mae.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made to the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame scholarship fund in Joe's name.
