He was predeceased by: his parents, Curtiss Strain and Anna Strain; his wife Mary Kohler; and his sisters, Carol Butts, Jean Gates and Doris Dickens.

He is survived by: his children, Jerry Strain of Brazil, Walter Strain (Sara) of Cory and Ann Vanatti (Tony) of Brazil; his siblings, Donald Strain (Keneen) of Indianapolis, Richard Strain of Knightsville and Lois McKinney of Brazil; his grandchildren, Chad Vanatti (Crystal Orndorff), Chris Vanatti (Holly), Curt Vanatti, Sheena Strain and Josh Strain (Kenzi); and his great grandchildren, Parker, Zyler, Kasyn, Jaxton, Lincoln, Claire and Andrew. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other extended family.
