Though Derek Nikolaus may no longer walk beside us, his memory will forever be enshrined in the fabric of the lives of those Derek Nikolaus touched, a beacon of light guiding us through the darkness. In his absence, his spirit lives on — a gentle whisper in the breeze, a ray of sunlight on a cloudy day, a reminder that love knows no boundaries.

He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Ashley; and his sons, Nikolai and Theo. He was also cherished by his parents, his grandmother, his two brothers, a sister-in-law and several cherished nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Derek's memory to the University of Iowa I-Club or to a local animal shelter or sanctuary of your choice.
