He was predeceased by : his parents, Victor O. Schmit and Kathleen Marie Schmit (Armitage); his siblings, Victor Schmit, Mary Ann Chezem and Kay Price; his brother-in-law Tom Chezem; his niece Monica Chezum Morris; and his sister-in-law Sally Schmit.

He is survived by : his siblings, Frank Schmit (Debbie) of Dayton, Ohio, Joe Schmit (Vicki) of Bradenton, Florida, Gene Schmit (June) of Bryant, Jerry Schmit of Adrian, Michigan, Esther Johnson (Bill) of Warsaw, Indiana, Pat Halfman (Dennis) of Carmel, Indiana, Mike Schmit (Barb) of Mount Carmel, Illinois, Phil Schmit (Cecelia) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Paul Schmit of Angola, Indiana and Jan Konchalski of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and his brother-in-law Randy Price of Pendleton, Indiana. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
