He was predeceased by: his parents, Wray Adam Shankel and Alice Grace Shankel (Franklin); and his siblings, Jean Slemboski, Daniel Shankel and David Shankel.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara K. Shankel (Varn); his children, Shaun Adrian Shankel (Erin), Andrea Nicole Lausch (Steve), Adam Matthew Shankel (Christina) and Stephany Ann Cardinali (Tony); his grandchildren, Tyler Staley, Evangeline Shankel, Zavier Shankel, Stella Shankel, Zoe Shankel, Matthew Lausch, Noah Lausch, Charlotte Cardinali, Alice Shankel, Lily Shankel and Penelope Cardinali; and his great grandchild Baker Staley.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Cornerstone Lutheran Church (4850 E Main St, Carmel, IN 46033). A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 27th 2026 at 6:00 PM at the same location. A burial will be held on Wednesday, October 28th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Marion National Cemetery (1700 E 38th St, Marion, IN 46953).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Indy Honor Flight (indyhonorflight.org or PO Box 10, Plainfield, IN 46168) or the American Legion.
