He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Yates and Ruth Sluder. He is survived by: his children, Ashley Norris and Perry Walton (Krystal); his siblings, Lowell Yates, Phillip Yates (Julie) of Coalmont and Teresa Keller (Brett) of Jasonville; his half-brothers, Drew Sluder of Terre Haute and Dewey Sluder of Terre Haute; his stepmother Debbie Yates; his nephew John David; and his sister Debbie Goble.
